Abstract/Summary:
To solve the growing need to provide a reliable source of wetland mitigation and support investment in and revitalization of New York City’s ports and waterways, NYCEDC, in collaboration with City, State and Federal agencies, established a tidal wetland mitigation bank at the Saw Mill Creek Marsh on Staten Island’s west shore. The project, initiated in 2013, has restored 54 acres of wetlands and is generating mitigation credits that support waterfront infrastructure projects across the City. NYCEDC expects the Saw Mill Creek Pilot Wetland Mitigation Bank will also direct more public and private funds for restoration projects in the City’s ecologically sensitive coast.
